Breakfast

 

Through smiling eyes, I watch the twelve-year-old boy across the table describe his favourite breakfast through purple, blueberry-stained teeth and lips: "This is my favourite breakfast in the world: whole grain pancakes and blueberry sauce." As he takes another bite and the kids discuss more of their favourite breakfast dishes, I think of what to tell them when it's my time to share.

Breakfast has always been my favourite meal of the day. I love the feeling of an empty stomach, the desire to really need and want to eat. I believe it's the first opportunity to be kind to ourselves, to nourish ourselves and to be present in the choices we make for our day.

My favourite breakfast? It really is too hard to choose. With many coming in at a close second, I remain steadfast to the simplicity of a perfectly poached egg on top of a piece of toasted sourdough bread, finished with a pinch of sea salt and pepper.

Simple, nourishing and delicious.
